Car culture, especially enthusiast culture, is one of those things that you’d assume would foster an accepting, welcoming community, but in actuality winds up being incredibly divided into pseudo-tribal rival camps that are often unwelcoming if not outright hostile to those with differing automotive tastes.
I love the whole Jalop/Oppo approach to car enthuiasm, which is one of the most universal and open of all communities. Well, provided you accept brown into your heart, and hold firm in the belief that wagons are the best body style for practical cars and the shooting brake is the ultimate expression of sporting design.
The Need for Speed promotional tool turned seriously legit car culture blog Speedhunters is a similarly open community, and as part of their branding, they have a series of four symbols that are meant to sum up their way of thinking about cars, and honestly, it’s a pretty great philosophy for an enthusiast community.
The symbols, as I have cut and pasted, are:
Heart – Passion
Loving cars is what we do. It’s our thing. Sometimes it’s not easy, but all of the best relationships have their ups and downs. The heart is all about showing love and commitment to your automotive passion.
Square – Strength
The square symbolises power, skill and quality. The adrenaline kick that only raw torque and horsepower can give us, the grin on our face when we nail the perfect corner entry, the sense of satisfaction we get from the perfect seam-weld. Only those with a strong bond with machine can understand.
Circle – Unity
Without other people to share it with, our love for cars wouldn’t be the same. Circle is about coming together as a community and enjoying our collective passion as one. Working on cars with mates, racing each other and discovering new cars with friends.
Shield – Tolerance
The shield represents open mindedness and standing up for your own beliefs. It’s about acceptance, respect and not caring what people think. Rise above negative influences and don’t let others define you.
Was the main driving force behind the symbols creating something to sell in sticker and t-shirt form? Most definitely. Are they a way to define an excellent approach to enthusiast car culture? Very much so.

I’d offer you a Snickers, but I guess this’ll work better:
